$1.2bn fine in case against Risperdal

Downplaying of symptoms has earn’t Johnson & Johnson a $1.2 BILLION dollar fine. The case by the state of Arkansas alleged that J&J (the producers of Risperdal),

“minimised or concealed the dangers associated with an antipsychotic drug,” notably diabetes and weight gain.

Circuit Judge Tim Fox ruled that Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc and its parent company must pay $US5000 for each of 240,000 Risperdal prescriptions the state health coverage program paid for during a three-and-a-half year period, accounting for the bulk of the penalty.

This landmark ruling is set to be the first of many against the company with a judge in South Carolina upholding a $US327 million civil penalty against Johnson & Johnson and Janssen in December and another case Texas reached a $US158 million settlement in January.
